17th century Turtle Island, the future home of North America, was a battleground of white male dominance when the Europeans fought to expand their empires and colonize this “new found land”. The goal of expansion was hindered for the French by a lack of female colonists, without whom population growth was not possible. King Louis XIV offered a solution with a program, which came to be known as “Les Filles du Roi”, in which the crown provided travel fees, compensation and dowries for young eligible unwed women. Nearly a thousand women made the journey, overcoming tremendous adversity and in their bravery, birthed a nation.
The stories of these women remained silenced, relegated to footnotes in history books, unknown and forgotten. It is time to allow HERSTORY her chance to bring truth to power, to claim their place in the spotlight. This musical is a statement about truth, tenacity and the power of the womb.
This theatrical adventure will take audiences on a journey, full of charm, wit and enlightenment with a story that has been kept in the shadows for too long but deserves to be told through the eyes of a modern retelling.
